WELCOME

Welcome to the Urban Culture course at Avila University created by Susan Lawlor and Dotty Hamilton.  We travel with our students to great cities to explore art museums, engage with the architecture, study the local film and music venues, and experience the ethnic enclaves as a way to learn about the culture of urban spaces and the interaction of art and environment.  It's a fun, intense learning environment.

Multicultural tour of Montreal

After lunch we hopped aboard a bus to tour the cultural hotspots of the city. Our guide did a great job of pointing out highlights and giving us some Montreal history along the way.

View of the city from atop the Montreal "mountain." Of note are the Olympic facilities with the leaning white tower.

Statue in honor of Dante Alighieri (author of The Divine Comedy) in "Little Italy." Various cultural groups are represented in this truly diverse city of immigrants.

Learning a bit more about Chinatown, which just happens to be RIGHT next to our hotel.

  1. This was a great opportunity to get an overview of the city on your first day there - glad that Susan added this to our trip itinerary this year.

  2. Though our tour consisted mostly of us sitting on a bus, this was probably the most challenging part of the trip for me. We toured all the differnt burrows of Montreal and caught a glimpse of a few different religions, culters, and languages. Until this moment, I was under the impression that Kansas City was fairly diverse and open-minded. Not until I visited Monteal was I fully able to grasp what true multiculturalism meant. It was a very eye-opening experience
