WELCOME

Welcome to the Urban Culture course at Avila University created by Susan Lawlor and Dotty Hamilton.  We travel with our students to great cities to explore art museums, engage with the architecture, study the local film and music venues, and experience the ethnic enclaves as a way to learn about the culture of urban spaces and the interaction of art and environment.  It's a fun, intense learning environment.

Montreal after dark

After our Korean dinner, we caught a film at a nearby cinema and then walked the Quarter des Spectacles, Montreal's premiere entertainment district.

Swinging is fun for adults too! Especially when they're lit up and play musical notes as you swing back and forth.

Highlighted wall of musicians who have performed at the world famous Montreal jazz festival.

Lighting and projected graphics and images are a big part of what makes this entertainment district so special.

  1. What struck me most about the Quartier des Spectacles, especially the Place des Arts, was just how comfortable it was to be walking on the street at night, and how welcoming the citizens were. All the different street performances, as well as people just relaxing in the different seating areas, and enjoying the swings; there's so much to do! Really enjoyed this area of the city.

  2. It's hard to beat the Quartier des Spectacles area! Loved seeing the Luminous Pathway and swinging. Saw lots of adorable children playing in the fountains and with the giant chess pieces. Natasha & I walked around in the underground area near the Place d'Arts and there was lots of amazing art down there as well including a cool interactive piece that was like a giant Lite Brite!

  3. One thing that touched me the most about Monteal was the presence of local art everywhere. No matter where you were there was always some type of instillation by a local artist. It was very refreshing to experience a culture that valued art so much that there is actually a law that says 1% of government building funds have to go towards an art instilation for new buildings.

Did you know that since 1986 Kansas City has had a 1 percent for art program. Some of the art work has been controversial - like the Sky Stations at Bartle Hall or the Modern Communication sculpture. http://kcmo.gov/generalservices/wp-content/uploads/sites/34/2014/01/One-Percent-for-Art-catalog.pdf
Here is a link that shows some of the art purchased by the program.
